7: Bay City Rollers!

As some of you may know, over the past couple
of years I've been writing a book about growing up in Berkeley.
Someday soon I hope to finish the book, but today I want to share
a couple paragraphs that I originally wrote about 2 years ago.
After reading, you will see why I've decided to share this.
Here are the words I wrote, only edited for brevity, not content, these are
the original words:
"...One evening my school jazz band had one of its seasonal concerts at the Berkeley
Little Theater. The Little Theater was adjacent to the Berkeley Community Theater,
(the Big Theater) where during the 70's the likes of Billy Joel, Springsteen,
and any emerging touring recording artist would play. On this night, there appeared
to be many more fans than usual around the theater complex as my mother pulled
up in front.
As I was sitting in my chair on stage before the concert trying to tune up
my horn, I kept hearing a thumping and a shrill screeching sound leaking through
the walls seemingly coming from the bigger theater next door. We still had
a few minutes before we were to begin our little concert in the little theatre
for our little parents, so, gawker that I am, I put my sax down and went on
a journey to find the source of these sounds. I went downstairs under the stage
to the corridor that connected the two theaters, wondered through an underground
maze of hallways, went up some stairs, down and up some more, all the while
the sounds getting louder, until I finally came to a door marked "Stage". I
chose to open the door. A wise move.
Suddenly there I was on the side of the stage of the Berkeley Community Theater.
What I saw stuck with me for years. What I heard stuck even more.
I was within 10 feet of a pop star in full Scottish regalia and a post-Beatle
spiked haircut singing and playing bass with his buddies. The audience was
on their female teenage feet screaming their lungs out. It was surreal. I then
noticed that the entire band was noticing me on the side of the stage. They
all were looking at me, I was sure they were telepathically asking me to lose
the jazz nerds and join their pop band.
Guess I'll never know. I was discovered and returned to my proper gig in the
Little Theater, did my jazz solos, and as I jumped into my mother's VW bus
for the ride home, we watched as the young lads left in their limos with the
young similarly dressed Bay Area girls flinging themselves at the windows.
I just stared in awe. At that moment I decided that being some smart ass smug
jazz affecianado may be a bit less enticing than having big spiky hair and
having girls go wild over you. I wonder if the Bay City Rollers still might
want me for their reunion tour?"
I wrote those words about a defining moment in my music life. I opened a door
and everything changed. I didn't know how I was going to get there, but I knew
I was going to get on that stage. Within a few years I was on my way to L.A.
to join Candy, essentially our version of the original article.
Today I am honored, proud, humbled, and friggin' freaked out to announce that
I have been invited by Ian Mitchell to be the new lead singer of the BAY CITY
ROLLERS. I have, of course, accepted.
This is the beginning of a new journey, lots of shows are planned, and I'm
busting to get out there and join Craig, Joe, Ian and a top notch band on stages
around the planet. (Ian has written a very nice introduction on his myspace
blog: myspace.com/iankmitchell)
Over the years there have been offers, some pretty darn sweet, some odd [I
was once asked to be the lead singer of the Japanese metal band, Loudness (?!)],
but never did the situation make sense to me on every level. If I were to join
another band it would have to have these elements: Magic, Talent, Great Songs,
and History. The Rollers have oodles of all of these elements with oodles to
spare. They also happen to be very nice guys, insane, but nice.
This doesn't mean a shut down of the next solo album or the "other" part of
me, I expect to release a new single in the Fall, this will just make everything
even more potent.
I hope you guys will come with me on this journey--it's gonna be a fun ride
and all of my friends are invited.
Let the door open.

13: Big News Times 3!

BIG NEWS #1:
I'm giddy. I've just returned from Nashville where I
was one of 175 people personally trained for 3 days by the
Hon. Al Gore to be an official presenter of his slide show,
as seen in "An Inconvenient
Truth".
After some prep time I will be taking an updated, edited and personalized
version of it with me on the road, presenting the slide
show live!
How did all this come to be?
Mr.
Gore and his non-partisan organization, "The Climate Project" made
a commitment to train 1000 individuals chosen from around the world
to come to Nashville where a team of climate change scientists,
educators, but mostly the former veep himself provided attendees
with the information and skills needed to present our own version
of "An
Inconvenient Truth" in towns across America and around the world.
Somehow I was picked to be one of the final group of 175. I'm convinced
there was some sort of mix-up, and I got the invite of some big
wig engineer named Lyle Benson.
It was an intensive, action packed experience. Mr. Gore, apart
frombeing a humble, warm, funny as heck, self-deprecating man,
is awonderful professor who obviously loves teaching. He has boundless
energy and enthusiasm for this subject, and welcomed questions
from us. He was also a cool cat to hang out with at B.B. King's
last Tuesday night. (There is a silly photo of us up on my myspace
site, --a better one will be coming soon).
During the entire process no politics were discussed, just
science, urgency, and hope.
For years now I've tried using my music to bring awareness
to environmental and other issues, and now with the official backing
of The Climate Project I look forward to doing my part to spread
the word.
You can read about it here (I'm the musician!):

BIG NEWS #3
I wanted to quickly get this late breaking gig info out to
all of you
before we part:
Tomorrow/Today (Sat. April 14), there will be over 1300 events
throughout the U.S. where people will gather to address the climate
crisis. I will be speaking, and performing a couple tunes at the
one in Amherst, MA, but there is certainly one near YOU.

Please send the link to everyone you can.

22: iTunes Baby!
This just in: 2, count 'em, TWO long Out of Print
albums of mine just popped up on iTunes for your digital
downloading pleasure!
"Trust"--originally
recorded in '92, slated for release in '92, but then
in '93, OK, for sure in '94, Kyle, you can trust us,
it's coming out in '95...until it disappeared into
the land of the unreleased.
Well, it's back, jack, with 2 bonus tracks! Some special guests appear
on this album including Gerry Beckley from the band America; jazz great
Gerald Albright on tenor sax; my old bandmate Gilby Clarke on, well you
know; and a gaggle of big name, Grammy winning studio
players, producers, writers, and arrangers. This was one big budget recording.
The 2nd release is "Sweet 16"--a
compilation of unreleased demos &
outtakes from the 80's-90's--some not bad, some not great, but you
get 18 songs for 9.99, so the good ones pay for the cruddy ones! How
can you lose?!
That link for all of my wares on iTunes is:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=4363902
(give it time to load iTunes. If you don't have iTunes, you can try
Rhapsody or some other ones out there.)
For those of you still here--I'm finishing up a new DVD, which will
feature all sorts of live clips from the past, commercial studio
videos including the infamous Candy video (with crisp, new,
remastered audio!), Never Say Die, Wake Me Up, and The First Thing On
My Mind; weird TV appearances, (you won't wanna miss my 2 seconds on
Bev Hills 90210!), and a whole buncha bonus clips. I hope to have
it
ready for the holidays--just not sure which holidays.
June 14: 7, count 'em, 7 Quickie updates:
1. Tottlin' Town! I'll be in Chicago THIS WEEKEND
for 3 shows! www.kylevincent.com/calendar.htm
2. Petals of Peace: Wendell Rheinheimer has designed a t-shirt
for the song "Petals
of Peace", and they look great!
3. New CD! We will be making a LIVE CD at the Father's Day show on June 18th
in Chicago. If you want to own this show, (which will be signed and dated), please

4. Nude, er, New Interview! Not sure what I was on when I did this one, but enjoy:
http://www.annex22.com/06.07.06--KyleVincentInt.html
5. New Message Board!- free of spam and wackos..well, at least there's no spam.
It's easy, free, relatively anonymous, and it's where I post news FIRST, we yell
about politics, share seitan recipes, and discuss why Scarlet Johansson isn't
returning my calls. Please sign up...I get lonely out here on the farm with only
my radishes and bok choi...it's nice to read stuff from you guys. Here's the
link: http://www.kylevincent.com/PBL465/
6. MYSPACE! My pal Scott in Australia set me up on that wacky myspace where
you can view some odd & rare photos, meet all my groovy "friends", (and a few,
uh, interesting ones), and post comments. I like to call it "KV AFTERDARK",
because it's a bit more racey than our more refined website. Check it out and
become my close, personal friend, just like Kenny Rogers!
http://www.myspace.com/kylevincent
7. UNIVERSAL DIGITAL ALBUM! "Invisible Man", on UMe Digital is doing
very well thanks to the fine people at Universal who are getting me interviews
and publicity all over the place. Just the other day Electric Eye Radio, which
has 2 million listeners around the world every day, played the album IN ITS
ENTIRETY! A big thanks to Big Machine Media for helping with the publicity.
Please pass this link along to your friends so they can hear the music: http://www.kylevincent.com/start.htm
Before we part, I want to welcome all of my new friends from Japan. We are already
talking about my next trip there! If anyone missed all the hoopla and photos,
it's all there on the website.
That's all for now, but, if you're still reading this, you're insane, and just
the type of person we'd like hosting a show! I'm planning on hitting the road
again in the late summer/fall, (I'm already booked in Ohio in August!), so if
you'd like to host a live show, it's easy. Just email amy@kylevincent.com, and we'll get you
the details.
Can't wait to see my friends in Chicago very soon, and everyone else for some
summer/fall dates.
A
DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL RECORDS
6th time is the charm!!???
Feb.
21: I
am very happy to announce that I have signed a new deal with
UNIVERSAL to release an album via their new Digi-only label "UMe" which
will splash the collection on iTunes and many other downloading
sites this coming Tuesday, February 28th.
The album is called, "INVISIBLE MAN" (ain't it da truth), and
will feature 11 songs that I personally plucked from the last
few records, including the title track co-written with Parthenon
Huxley, which is the kick off single.
This is Universal's online label where people can download the entire album or
just individual songs.
On a personal note, I've been associated with the good folks at Universal a couple
times before, many of the same people are still there, so it feels like coming
home again. I'm happy as a rabbit on a bale of oat hay to be a Universal artist.
Special thanks to Jay Gilbert for this opportunity to reach many new music fans
around the globe, and to my old, I mean, long time friend, Linda Kury, for all
she's done and is about to do on my behalf!
JAPAN---I'm off to Japan in a few weeks, - if you want to see a groovy poster
for one of the gigs, click or copy/paste this:
http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~fiore/postweb.jpg
I will be keeping a daily journal of the trip, so keep checking the website/journal
page for ramblings.
Peace to you,
kv
PS.I'm booking Living Room Shows for the Midwest May/June. Contact me asap if
interested in hosting.
GATHERING
DUST: RARE AND UNRELEASED VOL. 2
Oct. 17: Quietly,
secretly, on the QT, in a fake moustache/nose/glasses disguise, I
spent my summer free moments in a dark alley putting together a special
NEW ALBUM for all of you, and now it's here...it's my gift to you
guys for hanging in there with me. OK, it's not TECHNICALLY a gift,
it does cost a bit of money, but in THEORY it's a gift, and
that's not bad.
"Gathering Dust"...the new album will be available for ordering via my website
by NOVEMBER 1st. This album is a collection of never-before-released songs,
some new, some old but tweaked, some LIVE, heck there's even one in espanol..yep,
you heard me, Jack, I'm crooning in el language d'amor...or is that French?
Well, no matter, it's all here and can be yours in just a few precious days!
I really had a blast making this CD, and if you've dug my other stuff, I think
you'll dig this one.
But wait!...if you simply cannot wait for Nov. 1st, then get yo beehind to
one of the upcoming shows in Arizona, California, and Oregon, and YOU, my
west coasting friend, will have first, advanced crack at this album as I
will have it in tow. In fact, the first night it will be sold will be on
Friday, October 21 in Phoenix. That's an astounding ELEVEN days BEFORE the
release date! Simply amazing. How DOES he do it?
JAPAN OR BUST!
Finally, a big shout out across the ocean! Come January it's looking
like this cat is heading to JAPAN! The Land of the Rising Sun. Hey, wait...you
mean THEY have an actual sun over there? Would someone please ask them
to send a bit of that starshine over this a-way? Anyway, a group of friends
have put a little tour together for me, but they need to hear from anyone
interested in attending a show so they can be sure to have a good turnout. So
if you are receiving this in Japan, (or have a ton of frequent flyer
miles), please email Masaki at: m-hata@po.iijnet.or.jp so he can
tell you what's up. Don't delay, tell your friends. You know, the first
time I was booked to play Japan was on a bill with KISS and BON JOVI
on New Year's Eve with my big-haired band. The show got cancelled, and
so did the band. Maybe in memory of the show that never happened I'll
wear my studded spandex capezios.
LIVING ROOM SHOWS AVAILABLE
If anyone is still reading this...(man have you
got time on your hands)...remember, if you'd like to book me to play for
you and your friends in YOUR living room, or school, or even the opening
of an envelope, please email me directly and we'll make it happen. Now booking
shows all over the planet for late '05/early '06. Email
me!
THROW
A NEW DEAL ON THE BARBIE, MATE
Sept.
21: Hey
there, pardon the intrusion but I wanted to let you know
that yesterday I signed a distribution & publishing deal
for my stuff to be released in Australia and New Zealand.
It's a nice group of OZ folks who have had some huge successes
down there, so I'm in good hands. I'll let you know when
there is a release date and possible tour info as soon as
I have it.
WELCOME AND THANKS
I
want to welcome all the new friends I made on this last leg
of the never ending tour. We shared some memorable moments
and I can't wait to see you all out there somewhere on the
road soon. And of course, it was comforting to see the familiar
faces who have been with my little dog and pony show for
many moon now.
JAPAN NEWS
Some
Japanese fans are planning to realize Kyle's visit in Japan
in late January, 2006. The fans over there have established
a web presence and are looking for other fans in the area
to coordinate the efforts.
From Masaki Hata:
- We are establishing a fund for such plan.
- We assume Kyle's stay will be one week - 10 days. (Of course,
depend on Kyle's wish)
- We need information on the live-house in Tokyo area. (We have some info on
Kyoto/Osaka area live-houses.)
If you are a Japanse fan and interested in learning more about being a part
of Kyle's visit to Japan, please
visit Masaki's website. (please note the website is
in Japanese)
Sept. 1: And..in other hometown news...I
just found out that I have been nominated in the Valley Advocate
Music Awards for Singer/Songwriter of the Year. I think the last
award I won was on the Hollywood softball team for patrolling centerfield,
which had little to do with singing or songwriting, so this is a nice local
nod. I'll send details on how to vote as soon as I have them.
(In the mean time, someone please contact the good folks at Diebold
so we can 'adjust' the election results if we have to.)
West Coast Alert!!!!!!!:
We're starting to book Western U.S.
shows for Autumn. If you are in
any of these areas and would be interested in
possibly hosting a Living Room
Show, email me asap and I'll get you the details
on how to do so. (The weekend slots
fill up fast, so don't delay!):
Denver, CO
Salt Lake City, UT
Boise, ID
Portland, OR
Seattle, WA
San Francisco, CA
Los Angeles, CA
San Diego, CA
Phoenix, AZ
Tucson, AZ
Las Vegas, NV
Keep in mind that
when I'm in an
area, I'm always
up for bookings
at any level
school for talks and/or
performances,
and also enviro/animal/veg/tree-huggin'/twig-eatin'
organization shindigs that might fit into the schedule.
THE
NEW ALBUM IS HERE!!!!
RELEASED IN THE U.S. TUES.,
FEBRUARY 8, 2005!
Please
sign up for THE MAILING LIST here!
Thanks
for hanging in there and waiting...this was by far the most enjoyable
and satisfying album I've ever done. I've also never worked harder
on any musical project to make sure it was just right. I sure
hope that comes across through the grooves!
Talk
at ya soon,

RECENT
PAST NEWS...NEW SONGS FOR PEACE
"Sierra," a song off of 'Solitary
Road', has been accepted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which is collecting songs
that express love of the environment, humanity, and self-development
in the name of peace. When finished,
"New Songs for Peace" will be a book of songs available
to teachers, activists, singers and others as a way of promoting
both singing and a consciousness for peace. "Sierra" will
